Helping All Young Writers Practice Self-Advocacy

Over the last three years, I’ve become increasingly interested in how we can help young writers advocate for themselves within and beyond Studio. When kids are coached to understand who they are, what they are good at, and where they need more support as writers, they approach their work with greater joy and less frustration. I’ve been wondering how we can continue to help Studio kids speak up at critical moments, so their teachers might be able to help them better. I know that there is an awful lot of talk about the need for change inside of our schools. I honestly believe that it’s our kids who need to be leading that change, in so many ways.

The following series of posts were published on my professional blog at WNY Education Associates first, but I thought that sharing them here might provoke a bit of conversation between parents, kids, and teachers as we gear up for our fourth season and help newcomers learn more about the kind of thinking and work we do together.
